Recently, Greenpeace released the Guide to Greener Electronics (Nov '12). It is a report that analyzes the green initiatives of various global consumer electronics companies. It's a matter of pride to us that Wipro, a company based in India, has topped that list.
While many green initiatives were evaluated, Wipro's renewable energy initiatives played an important role in increasing their score. Some renewable energy/energy efficiency initiatives undertaken by Wipro are given below.
- Wipro has set clear targets for renewable energy implementation and green house gas reduction. They have publicly disclosed the same.
- Wipro does generate a part of its energy requirements using renewable energy technologies, but they also buy electricity from renewable energy-based power generators.
- During 2012-13, Wipro has launched two 100 KW Solar PV pilot projects at Chennai and Kolkata. They are expected to follow it up with many more.
- Wipro has stated that they will be exploring clean energy-based cooling solutions like Earth Air Tunnel.
- They already have Power Purchase Agreements (PPA) to procure renewable energy from micro hydro power-plants/generators. During 2011-12, they purchased almost 50 million units from them.
- Wipro contributed to the development of national renewable energy policy by giving suggestions to improve the JNNSM (Jawaharlal Nehru National Solar Mission) program by MNRE.
- Wipro's emissions and carbon footprint are verified by a third-party company, DNV.
- Wipro's latest hardware products are Energy Star compliant and hence they demonstrate higher levels of energy efficiency.
- 63% of its hardware products meet or exceed the stringent ES 5.0 requirements for energy-efficiency.
- Wipro has stated that energy reduction for their own electricity consumption will happen through adopting initiatives like server virtualization, LEED buildings, etc.
