At the recently concluded Wind Power India 2012 expo in Chennai, I met up with the officials of GKIP (GK Industrial Park), Trichy. GKIP is a private integrated heavy engineering park located in Trichy, Tamil Nadu (southern most state of India). GKIP is an IC&FS cluster development initiative.
They were inviting wind turbine manufacturers and other heavy engineering manufacturing units that support the wind turbine industry (among others), to set up their factory at GKIP.
Trichy is an important/fast-developing city located in central Tamil Nadu. With a network of over 1000 industries, Trichy is already one of the manufacturing hubs of India. It seems, Trichy accounts for 60% of India's wind mill tower fabrication.
Trichy is well connected to the Golden Quadrilateral national road highway and other state/national highways, has a full-fledged railway junction, has domestic/limited-international airport and is somewhat close to major international ports like Karaikal (126 KM), Tuticorin (265 KM), Chennai (325 KM).
Trichy is the educational hub of Tamil Nadu and is home to important educational institutions like NIT, IIM, Bharathidasan University, etc. There is no shortage of both skilled and unskilled workforce, required for manufacturing units. Trichy also has a good local bus/other transport network.
The brochure given by GKIP officials contained the sizes of available industrial plots at their park,
Tiny units: 0.33 acres
Small units: 1-2 acres
Medium units: 4-5 acres
Large units: More than 10 acres
