  • I happened to visit the K-Lite Light Show 2013 at their factory-showroom in Ambattur Industrial Estate, Chennai. The above video was taken there and it shows the solar/wind powered LED & CFL lights they had kept for display. Since it was morning, the lights were not (yet) powered on. Their set-up had solar panels/innovative micro wind turbines that produce electricity, save it in batteries and power these outdoor lights during the nights.

K-Lite Industries is a part of the 'Kumbhat Group' and their factory/showroom is located at Ambattur Industrial Estate, Chennai. They also have showrooms at Nungambakkam and other locations in Chennai/Rest of India. They manufacture complete lighting/luminary systems using LED lamps, CFL lamps, T-5 lamps, etc. They manufacture street lights, industrial lights, pathway lights, garden lights, residential lights, flood lights, etc. They also provide custom-built lighting solutions.

K-Lite is an ISO 9001 certified company and they have full-fledged in-house fabrication and testing facilities. They cater to commercial, institutional, government and residential customers across India. They also export their lights to various countries across the world. Some of their lights have already been certified for UL (according to their About Us page).

You can have a look at some solar street light models offered by them, from here. The micro-wind turbine powered street lights are currently being tested and they expect to include it in their range of products, shortly.

Solar street lights can be very useful in rural/remote areas where obtaining electrical grid connectivity is very difficult/time-consuming. They can also be useful as street lights, garden lights and pathway lights, as wiring outdoor locations is often difficult and expensive. Even though solar lights (Lights + Solar Panels) are more expensive than conventional lighting systems, their running cost is close to zero. On the long run, solar lights enable you to save much more, than conventional lighting systems.

In a country like India, where sun shines pretty much throughout the year, solar lights are a very useful and welcome addition. Solar lights generate electricity using the solar panels attached to them during the day, store the electricity in batteries and use the stored energy to power LED/CFL lights in the nights. Solar lights work even during cloudy days.

More importantly, these lights can take some burden off our national grid which can ultimately result in reduced power-cuts at many places. If you are looking to buy lighting systems for your company/organization, why not look at solar lights?
