Greenpeace activists have been highlighting the importance of renewable energy and the generation of decentralized power through solar panels, through various campaigns in Delhi. One such creative campaign was conducted on 15th May, when Greenpeace activists blockaded the entrance of the power minister, Haroon Yusuf, with 2.3 KW of solar panels.
They later met him, communicated their request for bringing up a strong renewable energy policy to encourage roof-top solar scheme in Delhi and gifted the 2.3 KW solar panels to the power minister! Ah, how I would have loved to receive that set!! I think we need to follow up on whether the power minister installs the solar panels in his residence or not. That should be sufficient to power up his entire house! :)
Anyway, you can read more about this campaign on the Greenpeace site or Deccan Chronicle site. Greenpeace has recently published a wonderful report on Renewable Purchase Obligation (click here for understanding it & details) that details RPO, REC: Mechanism & Implementation in India, and state-wise performance report.
I feel that people should start demanding renewable energy policies from the Govt. in order to fight the electricity crisis in the country. I request the people of Delhi to ask the various political parties (when they come to campaign for the state elections) on whether the parties have included policies that encourage faster renewable energy adoption, in their election manifesto? This will encourage the political parties to think more concretely on renewable energy adoption for the state.
Many states have already announced ambitious plans for renewable energy adoption. Why should Delhi be left behind??
