  • SECONDWIND was founded in 1980 and is based out of the US. They manufacture wind resource assessment systems, data loggers and remote sensing systems.

SECONDWIND manufactures Triton Sonic Wind Profiler, which is an advanced SODAR (Sonic Detection And Ranging) system. They also manufacture NOMAD 3 Wind Data Loggers and Skyserve wind data remote access service. These systems are available for the Indian wind energy market.

Wind farm developers need to study various wind parameters at the location where they wish to put up a wind power project. In India, the wind conditions need to be assessed for one year, before permission is granted for setting up wind power plants at that location.

A SODAR (Sonic Detection And Ranging) system uses sound to measure various wind parameters like wind speed, direction shear and wind turbulence, which are critical for estimating the wind turbine output at that location.

SECONDWIND manufactures TRITON Sonic Wind Profiler, which is a SODAR based system used for wind assessment and remote sensing. It seems, TRITON can record wind data at various heights from 40 meters to 200 meters. With this information, the preferred hub-height of the wind turbine, for maximum power output, could be determined.

They mention (in their website) that their TRITON system requires just 7 watts of power for continuous operation and hence it can be powered using two 85W solar panels at the site for uninterrupted operation. They also mention that they have observed good correlation between Triton measurements and tower measurements.

Other advantages of TRITON include (according to their website) - No permissions required (not sure if this is applicable for India), data monitoring via Internet (web-portal), quick installation (few hours), more than 95% up-time.

SECONDWIND also manufactures NOMAD 3 Wind Data Logger systems that allows one to connect various sensors including - Up to 12 anemometers, 8 analog devices, solar sensors, barometric sensors, etc. There are remote communication options to access NOMAD 3 like the SkyServe wind data service, also offered by this company.
