Woodward manufactures energy management products for the wind energy industry, among others. Incorporated in 1902, the company has its corporate office in Colorado, USA.
It is required to convert the power produced by wind-turbine generators to match the grid power requirements, before exporting the electricity to the grid. Woodward manufactures low/medium voltage converters for wind energy generators.
Woodward has installed more than 9,500 converters for on-shore/off-shore wind energy applications. According to their website, their intelligent converter algorithms and variable-speed generators optimize the power conversion efficiency. They manufacture the following wind converters,
* Low voltage converters for doubly-fed induction generators, for large/variable-speed wind turbines. Their modular design covers power classes from 1.25 MW to 6 MW.
* Low voltage full-size converters for synchronous generators, for power classes between 2 MW to 5 MW. This converter uses a compact and modular design and can be used with both on-shore and off-shore wind turbines.
* Medium voltage full-size converters for synchronous generators, covers power classes from 4 MW to 10 MW. These converters are designed to be used in harsh off-shore environments, and hence they are completely sealed.
