More specifically, if you want to know whether SOLAR ENERGY can provide for all our energy requirements today, the answer would be YES & we have the technology TODAY, but the only deterrence maybe the COST.
The cost of establishing new solar power plants (infrastructure, land, cables, etc) and the cost of eliminating our existing sources of energy. The later can be more expensive than you might estimate and hence it maybe better for both to coexist for sometime, before the SUN can TAKE OVER completely!!
I should remind you, however, that our existing technologies are majorly focused on solar PV (converting sunlight into energy) and not solar THERMAL (converting sun's heat into energy). In equatorial countries like India, it may make more sense to take advantage of the sun's heat, simply because it is abundantly available! People are already doing it in places like Auroville & Rajasthan.
As I write this, I am not wearing my shirt because the heat is simply unbearable! You can either look at the heat as a difficulty to escape from, or look at it as a BOON that will eventually become an EXCELLENT source of ENERGY, especially for energy starved countries like ours. Remember: With every CHALLENGE comes an OPPORTUNITY!
Did you know that SOLAR POWERED cars and trucks are AVAILABLE NOW? Did you know that a solar powered BOAT has CIRCUMNAVIGATED the globe? Did you know that a solar powered AIRPLANE has completed an INTER-CONTINENTAL flight journey?
Did you know that there are HOMES that are powered by Solar Panels? Did you know that there are colleges powered EXCLUSIVELY by solar power? Did you know that there are factories that make cars using SOLAR ENERGY?
Do you still think YOUR HOME and YOUR NEEDS cannot be POWERED by SOLAR ENERGY? Think AGAIN!!
