  • Hydro Energy is not just about large hydro power dams or micro hydro power plants. Hydro energy is also about Tidal energy, energy from waves, and much more. Atlantis Resources Corporation is a UK-based company that specializes in making tidal current generators to harness the kinetic energy of tidal current resources under seas/oceans.

Atlantis manufactures AK1000 Tidal power turbines that are similar to wind turbines, but are permanently located under the water in areas that have abundant tidal current movement. They are horizontal axis turbines supported by large boulders on the ocean bed. Since water is 832 times denser than air, smaller/slower turbines can provide higher power output. Similar to off-shore wind projects, the electricity generated by individual tidal turbines can be securely sent to the shore and connected to the grid.

Have a look at this page to understand more about tidal current energy. Of course, tidal energy is a renewable source of energy that is abundant (at certain locations) and provides predictable power output.

It was estimated back in 80's that India has more than 8000 MW (estimated) tidal energy in Gujarat, West Bengal and elsewhere. Gujarat has already taken the lead and signed an MOU for establishing 250 MW tidal power plant in Kutch district. It seems this is the first tidal energy project in Asia.

Atlantis Resource Corporation has estimated that there is considearble potential for marine energy in various parts of the world, including India. Atlantis is already working with Indian central/state Governments to explore the possibility of establishing tidal power plants. It is important that other state Governments in India, and perhaps even Asia start looking at harnessing tidal energy.
