  • I met the representatives from Vortex, at the recent Wind Power India 2012 expo at Chennai. Vortex is based out of Spain and they offer cloud-based wind energy atmospheric modeling service that can be accessed by customers across the world via a normal web-browser. Customers can use the hardware/processing capabilities of the Vortex cluster and hence they need not invest in their own hardware resources.

Vortex runs a non-linear flow model (WRF) to simulate wind data even at places where actual measurements are not available. They cater to both mesoscale (complimentary to customer measurements) and microscale (alternative to customer measurements) segments.

Vortex offers a free resource called INTERFACE that includes a low-resolution map.

They offer the following products (among others),

    * MAP - Used to prospect the right site with the right wind conditions, among many others.

    * MAST - Used to zero-in on the right site to set up a mast.

    * FARM - Used for effective wind farm design through a long-term wind field grid.

    * SERIES - Used to monitor the performance of the wind farm.
