  • The Tamil Nadu Energy Development Agency (TEDA) has been conducting an impressive green energy campaign, over the last couple of years. The above video was prepared by them in connection with 'Green Energy Virumbuvom', a public awareness campaign for promoting renewable energy technologies. The video is in English (click here for Tamil verson) and has been done quite professionally. The length of the video is 18 min, 53 sec. It could have been shorter but it's been done well, nevertheless.

Some interesting points from the video (for the benefit of people who don't have time to go through it),

    • Our (global) existing coal reserves will last for no more than 100 years, at our current rate of consumption. Our existing oil reserves will last for no more than 40-60 years, at our current rate of consumption. But, our energy consumption is increasing at an alarming rate each year, and hence these sources will be exhausted well before their estimated availability.
    • Energy from the sun (reaching the earth) is so powerful that one hour's of solar radiation can power the entire earth for one year. The question, therefore, is how we are going to harness all that energy and convert them into electricity. And not whether energy from the sun is sufficient.
    • One square feet of solar PV produces an average of 100-180 W of electricity. A 10 square meter space is sufficient to produce enough energy to power an entire house. Batteries maybe required to store power to be used at night. These numbers are based on yesterday's efficiency. Solar panels are becoming more and more efficient by the day.
    • 187 GW of electricity is being produced around the world.
    • In Tamil Nadu, Wind energy accounts for 6531 MW, Co-generation accounts for 610 MW, Biomass accounts for 161 MW and Solar energy accounts for 7 MW.
    • Tamil Nadu is producing 36% of all renewable energy in India and renewable energy accounts for 40% of the current grid-capacity of the Tamil Nadu state electricity grid.
As a part of their 'Green Energy Virumbuvom' campaign, TEDA has been organizing various events in schools and colleges around Tamil Nadu with a view of promoting renewable energy concepts to the younger generation. They are conducting essay writing, elocution, painting and other competitions for school and college students to increase the awareness about renewable energy technologies.

TEDA is also conducting seminars on green energy and a mobile van carrying renewable energy demonstrations has been moving across various schools across Tamil Nadu, to enable school students to have a hands-on experience. They have also been coordinating various renewable energy exhibitions (like RENERGY, TREE, etc) in order to facilitate the interaction between green energy vendors and manufacturers/solution providers and customers.

These initiatives are coming at a time when many states in India are power-starved. Hence, they need to be appreciated and let us hope that people will adopt renewable energy technologies in their homes/offices, irrespective of the availability of Government subsidies.
