Why not use solar pumps for pumping water in remote places?

  • One of the main activity for any person anywhere in this world, is to ensure sufficient water both for drinking and other purposes like irrigation, feeding cattle, home-use (washing), etc. In the cities and in most villages, electricity is provided by the Govt. by connecting our homes/farms to its electrical grid. But not everyone are lucky enough to be connected to the grid.

    Water is always required in remote areas where electricity is often not available. Even at places where electricity is available, the power supply may not be reliable. There maybe low-voltage issues or power cuts for long duration. It is possible to use diesel generators, but the hassle of constantly refilling the generator with diesel along with the rising price of diesel, makes it difficult to be used as the primary source of electricity. In such cases, it is prudent to explore the usage of solar pumps.

    Solar pumps are like normal pumps, but they can directly be connected to solar panels and can work using the DC power generated by them. In fact, some pumps (like the Grundfos SW Flex pump shown in the above video) can work along with solar panels, micro wind turbines, diesel generators and the grid, allowing the customer to choose the best source at any given point of time.

    Both submersible pumps and surface-mounted pumps can work with solar panels (or small wind turbines). They don't need a battery, but if a battery is used then the reliability of power-availability is increased. Also, excess electricity generated by the solar panels/wind turbines can be utilized for other applications (if they are not being used by the pumps). If the battery is not used, solar panels work only during the day, when sunlight is available.  

    It is possible to set-up these pumps inside a bore-well or in a normal well. The type of pumps and the solar system capacity is decided based on the amount of water required (in liters) per day, water table height during summer and a few other parameters. Common solar pumps may have a range of 10-70 meters of pumping-head and can handle DC power form 30 - 300 V. They can work with solar panels of capacities ranging from 240W to 1440W (and higher). Higher the wattage, more is the volume of pumped water.
